The Issue:
A privately-owned company, Hess/Weaver’s Cove, is spending millions of dollars on a plan to build a massive liquefied natural gas (LNG) import Berth in Mt. Hope Bay. LNG supertankers would come from the Atlantic Ocean, past Newport, up the East Passage to the new Berth right next to Spar Island. Hess would then pump the LNG through a newly constructed large underwater pipeline to its new LNG facility on the Taunton River in Somerset, MA.
The Consequences:
The economy of southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island depends on a clean and healthy Narragansett Bay, the Bay’s rivers and Mount Hope Bay. The proposed LNG facility development will irrevocably damage the environmental health of Mount Hope Bay and will forever limit the ability of residents and visitors to use and enjoy the affected waters. This plan would permanently scar the Bay, jeopardize the fragile Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts economies and put us all in harm’s way.
